KUPANG, NTTZOOM-Since Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2019, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Governor Viktor Bungtilu Laiskodat has started implementing the English Day rule or an English-speaking day every Wednesday.
The policy of the Governor, Viktor Laiskodat with the Governor's Regulation Number 56 of 2018 concerning the English Language Day is still being questioned. Is it still valid, or not anymore.
However, the Governor's Special Staff, Pius Rengka, in a talk show held by gaharunews.com at the Aston Kupang Hotel a few weeks ago answered the confusion.
According to Pius, the policy is a part of an effort to answer the governor's big dream to make tourism as the main driver of development.
And, until now the governor is still carrying out the policy. "On Wednesday, when you enter the governor's office, please use English. So if you can't do it, just keep quiet," explained Pius.
The policy was previously initiated by the Head of the Tourism Office at that time, Marius Jelamu.
At that time, he explained that the main purpose of the regulation was to make English as a medium of communication in office environment activities and daily life throughout the East Nusa Tenggara region.
Marius said, English is an international language. "This is also in order to familiarize English for our society and also to encourage our children to learn English. English has many values and uses," said Marius.
Marius said English was not applicable, except for a number of official events such as flag ceremony and official government speeches. "Welcome to English Day every Wendnesday".(abm/cd3/nz)
